John had put us in contact with the key people from the Japanese Garden Community. Today we met and interviewed Setsuo Kato. He has been involved in the Japanese Garden since 2001 when he found this abandoned historical garden and wrote about it in his Japanese community newspaper. He brought it to the councils attention that the centenary of the 1910 Japanese Festival was approaching and did much through Japanese community groups and the Embassy to assist with the redevelopment and subsequent festivals. Since then, the Japanese Community in London and the Council worked to restore and improve it.
Some questions we asked him:
How did you get so involved with the garden?
What are the biggest difficulties?
What are your wishes for this place?
Do you know a lot about gardens? How do english Japanese gardens differ from traditional Japanese gardens?
What do you know about Haikus?
What do you think making haikus can teach us?
