We are understanding how to create our haiku generator. Haiku is an example of a strictly constrained task for text generation.

At the start, we chose the RiTa Library in Processing, that can generate texts according to simple rules that we define by RiGrammer:

We started feeding it with keywords. This is how we thought we would do during our haiku picnic: have people observe the garden and come up with a series of keywords to feed our generator with.

The problem we found with this was that the haikus generated by it were very often much less coherence than the ones made by humans. It seemed that we were not able to generate any meaningful haiku…

So we decided to change the rules of the game. This time, we would ask our guests to compose haiku lines of either 5 of 7 syllables and with our generator, we would juxtapose 3 of these lines to generate our haikus. We thought this would also make the whole activity more fun and interactive. And a little bit more challenging than simply coming up with keywords.
